Germany's early lead

Felix Nmecha put Germany ahead in the first half, and Cody Gakpo equalized for the Netherlands in stoppage time after Ruben van Bommel supplied the cross, BBC Sport reported. The late goal gave Xavi a draw in his first match as Netherlands coach and denied Klopp a win in his Germany debut.

Germany's goal came despite a clear statistical edge for the hosts. The Netherlands had 53.5% possession, took 22 shots to Germany's 10 and forced nine saves from Marc-André ter Stegen. Germany managed two shots on target and one corner.

The figures fit the contrast laid out before the match. Xavi's Netherlands were expected to build through possession, while Klopp wanted Germany to press and attack with speed. The Dutch controlled more of the ball and created more attempts, but Germany held the lead until the closing minutes.

Klopp's first Germany test

Klopp used a reshaped squad for the international window, with players divided across four matches. Freiburg right-back Philipp Treu was among the new selections, while Younes Ebnoutalib made his Germany debut after replacing the injured Kai Havertz.

The 30th-minute substitution changed Germany's attack early. Havertz was struck on the knee by a high boot from Quinten Timber, according to BBC Sport. Netherlands striker Brian Brobbey also left with what appeared to be a muscle injury and will return to Sunderland for treatment. Joshua Zirkzee was called up as his replacement.

Klopp accepted the result after the final whistle. “We have to accept the result. Even though I badly wanted to win I take the draw,” Klopp said.

He also praised Germany's effort while admitting the team needed to improve its use of the ball. The coach said he was pleased with the players' individual performances and passion, but added that Germany could play better.

The next Nations League matches

The draw leaves Germany and the Netherlands level on one point in League A Group 2, with Greece above them after beating Serbia. Germany next host Greece on Sunday, while the Netherlands travel to Serbia. The four-team group also includes a return meeting with Greece and another Serbia-Netherlands fixture during the window.
