Atlante beats Monterrey 4-2 as Jhojan Julio scores late
Atlante defeated Monterrey 4-2 in Liga MX, with Jhojan Julio scoring in the closing minutes.

How Atlante took control
Luis Puente opened the scoring in the 11th minute, finishing after a rebound inside the area. The goal gave Atlante an early lead at Estadio Banorte, where Record reported that Miguel Herrera’s team was seeking its second win of the Apertura 2026 tournament.
Monterrey answered seven minutes later. Óliver Torres supplied Hugo Cuypers, who struck with his left foot from the center of the area and found the upper-left corner. Óscar Jiménez and Esteban Andrada then kept the score level through the rest of the first half.
Atlante regained the lead eight minutes after halftime. Luis Calzadilla’s low shot went in beside the left post, putting the visitors back in front.
Monterrey’s response
Monterrey created openings after falling behind, but Jiménez kept Atlante ahead. The goalkeeper made a double save in the 81st minute as Monterrey pressed for an equalizer.
The pressure produced a goal one minute later. After a corner kick, Roberto de la Rosa headed the ball into the net to reduce the deficit. De la Rosa nearly tied the match again when his shot hit the crossbar in the 86th minute.
Atlante still had another response. Jhojan Julio had earlier assisted Eduardo Tercero’s goal, a left-footed finish in the 64th minute that put Atlante two goals ahead. In the closing minutes, Julio went around Andrada and scored the final goal of the match.
A rematch after 12 years
The victory came when Atlante returned to Mexico’s top division for the Apertura 2026 tournament after a 12-year absence. OneFootball reported that the teams’ previous official meeting had taken place on March 29, 2014, when Monterrey won 3-2 at the now-demolished Estadio Tecnológico.
The earlier meeting was part of a series that had produced 19 Monterrey wins, 10 draws and nine Atlante victories in 38 short-tournament matches, according to OneFootball. Atlante’s win at Estadio Banorte therefore ended Monterrey’s attempt to reach 20 victories in the series.
For Atlante supporters, the night brought a second tournament victory and a four-goal performance against Monterrey. The final score was 4-2.
