England scored 265 all out in 48.1 overs, and Sri Lanka finished on 176 all out in 37 overs, the BBC reported. The result gave England a 1-0 lead in the three-match one-day international (ODI) series.

England's 265-run innings

Harry Brook top-scored for England with 67 from 69 balls. Joe Root made 44, Ben Duckett scored 32 and Jos Buttler added 31. Will Jacks finished unbeaten on 46 from 47 balls.

Sri Lanka's Sachindu Colombage took three wickets on his ODI debut. He dismissed Root, Buttler and Jamie Overton, but England added late runs to reach 265 before being bowled out.

Jacks's match-turning spell

Jacks took 5-22 from seven overs. He removed Sri Lanka captain Kusal Mendis for 42 and dismissed Charith Asalanka for one. Rehan Ahmed took one wicket, while Jamie Overton took two.

Dunith Wellalage briefly gave Sri Lanka hope with 45 from 36 balls. He hit five fours and two sixes. Jacks ended the innings after Wellalage drove at a flighted delivery and was caught by Overton.

Sri Lanka's final wickets

Wellalage's dismissal left Sri Lanka 176 for eight. Jacks then had Asitha Fernando caught by Tom Banton for a duck, with the score still 176.

The final wicket fell at the same total. Jacks bowled Dilshan Madushanka for a duck, completing Sri Lanka's dismissal for 176 and his five-wicket haul.

Kusal Mendis had earlier made 42, but Sri Lanka lost six wickets for 105 runs before Wellalage's attack. The late partnership could not close an 89-run gap.

England's next match

The second ODI will be played at Headingley on Sept. 24, 2026. England will try to extend its series lead, while Sri Lanka will need a win to level the series. Adil Rashid was ruled out of the series with an injury.
