The Czech Republic thought it had forced a draw in the 80th minute, but video review disallowed Matej Radosta's goal for offside. The loss leaves the hosts last in Group A3, while Croatia takes the lead. The group also includes Spain and England.

Managerial Debut

The victory marked a winning return for Slaven Bilic, who is coaching Croatia for a second time 14 years after his first stint. "I am sincerely happy to take on this challenge," Bilic said. Santi Denia, the former Spanish youth coach, also debuted, becoming the first foreign manager in Czech Republic history.

Both teams play again on Sept. 29.
